About CSUN MUN
What is Model United Nations?
Model United Nations is a university level course that allows students to take part in simulations mirroring real-world United Nations business. Representing United Nations member-states, student delegations participate in committees to debate and propose solutions on any number of pertinent issues that face our global society. Human rights, sustainable development, economics, and international peace and security are just a few broad topics that delegates encounter.
Before student delegations sit down at the conference table they study their country’s position on the committee’s predetermined agenda. In order to accurately represent their chosen country - its foreign policy, culture, geography, history, current events, and future objectives will be researched by the students. In addition, the students will seek a full understanding of the history and circumstances surrounding the committee’s agenda so that realistic solutions may be sought.
Student delegations attend multiple conferences both regionally and nationally to participate in UN committee simulations with other students from universities within the United States and abroad. The delegates in the committee will debate the agenda for a period and then begin drafting resolutions or reports which attempt to resolve the issues at hand. The resolutions or reports are eventually brought up before the entire committee for a vote and must gain majority acceptance to be passed. Ultimately the final documents reflect the work of committee and consensus among its members.
Model United Nations allows students to practice diplomacy, negotiation, and policy writing. It exposes students to global viewpoints that would otherwise remain foreign to them. Most importantly Model UN highlights the benefits of international cooperation and concern for the welfare of humanity regardless of national borders.
